Games resembling golf were played in Roman times (paganica), in China during the Song Dynasty (chuiwan), and in medieval Europe (games like cambuca in England, chambot in France, and het kolven in the Netherlands). 

However, these early iterations lacked the standardized rules and structure that define modern golf.

While the precise origins of golf remain a matter of historical debate, Scotland is most famously credited with shaping the modern game. 

The first documented mention of golf in Scotland dates back to a 1457 Act of the Scottish Parliament, wherein James II banned "ye golf" to encourage focus on archery practice. 

Despite—or perhaps because of—such prohibitions, the game flourished, especially among the Scottish nobility.

The pivotal role of St. Andrews, the coastal town renowned as the "Home of Golf," cannot be overstated. 

The Old Course at St. Andrews, with its unique 18-hole layout, became the standard by which all other courses were measured. 

Moreover, the formation of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1754 marked a significant milestone in golf's history, as it began to codify the rules and standards of the game.

• Old Tom Morris: A legendary figure in golf, Morris was a four-time winner of The Open Championship and a pioneering golf course designer. His contributions to course design and maintenance significantly influenced how the game is played.
• The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews: This institution was instrumental in establishing the rules of golf and organizing The Open Championship, one of golf's four major tournaments.
